Makithri is not human in the traditional sense. She was once human, several hundred years ago. She sealed her spirit into a sword for reasons she refuses to discuss in detail, although they have something to do with her binding the demon queen Iyala when she was alive.
Makithri was one of the first Ahy'dara'ne, or High Priestesses of Silar. She had a much more personal relationship with Silar than any of the recent High Priestesses, and still 'talks' to Silar at times. She is able to see some of the future because of her priestess abilities, but she sees it fuzzily and incompletely. She knows that Tiana's supposed to be on a quest, and she will recognize people who are supposed to be their companions. However, she doesn't know exactly what they're supposed to do, and she can't name people until she's met them. It has been speculated that this is because there is more than one person in the world who can fit a particular "role" in their quest, and Makithri simply chooses the first one she comes across.
