Arion is the Crown Prince of Larykia*, the heir to an empire that covers about half of the known inhabitable world. He would seem at first to be a pretty powerful person, but unfortunately he doesn't get many more privilages or much more respect than the average son of a random nobleman. All of the real power in the Larykian Empire belongs to the Emperor in appearance, but in reality the Empress controls many of the more important parts of the government. Arion is mostly afraid of the Empress and doesn't really trust her. She married his father a few months after they met, claiming to be a princess from Octanis, a far away kingdom to the north that no one's ever heard of. A few months later, they decided it would be a great idea to conquer a few countries and have an empire. Arion's always thought that this was a little suspicious, but since he was about five at the time, there isn't much that her remembers or much that he can do about it.
Arion doesn't have a whole lot of control over his own life. He tends to get stuck in situations and just react, not taking much of an initiative. He first met Tiana and Umikirei because he wanted someone to help him do something about his stepmother's plot to conquer Vega. That's probably the first time in his life that he took action without being told to first. Of course, with Empress Iyala controlling his life, he didn't really have much of a chance to do anything else. Despite having grown up as the son of an evil overlord with a demoness for a stepmother, Arion somehow manages to be a pretty nice guy, aside from being sarcastic and annoying at times.
*Note: "Larykia" and "Larykian Empire" are used interchangeably in this story, but for anyone interested in technicalities, "Larykia" should really only be used to describe the country of Larykia as it existed approximately ten years before the beginning of "Running." "The Larykian Empire" describes Larykia and all of the countries conquered by it.
